Parents in the survey did seem to agree with a commission recommendation that instruction in basics be strengthened. That, the report said, could be attributed to their lack of the need for children to help with farm chores. People from the northeastern part of the country were more likely to advocate a change. More than 70 percent of them wanted to maintain the status quo. Most of the parents in the Research and Forecasts study did not agree with a National Commission on Excellence in Education recommendation that the school year be lengthened. Eighty- eight percent of all parents said they felt entitled to a moderate to great deal of involvement in setting course requirements.
